Trip Overview

Blues-loving ambassadors from Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee collaborated on Bridging the Blues (BTB). The result is a collection of suggested to-dos across the three states anchored by high-profile fests, namely Helena, Arkansas’ King Biscuit Blues Festival and Greenville, Mississippi’s Mighty Mississippi Music Festival. Both festivals take place in early October, coaxing out related affairs – homecomings, intimate performances, competitions, meet-ups, community celebrations – from late September through mid-October. Particularly if you’re a fest-head, you could turn BTB’s 2014 schedule of events into an itinerary. But I like to think of BTB as a flow: No matter when you visit, reference its suggested music venues, museums and the Mississippi Blues Trail to chase the blues at your tempo. I’ll highlight a mix of locales to help you plan in or outside of festival season, but remember: Sometimes it’s the places you discover in between that move you most.
