Beaufort, South Carolina

Beautiful beach settings, laid-back ambience: welcome to Beaufort. Sea Island Wine and Gourmet Market may not look fancy, but the burgers, fries, shrimp and grits from a menu that changes weekly are a treat to your palate. Stop in for lunch daily (order the chicken salad) or dinner Thursday through Saturday, when you can also order a glass of wine. For an elegant dinner, visit Breakwater Restaurant and Bar. The house-made pimiento cheese appetizer is a favorite, as is the Southern sampler platter, and a wide selection of reds and whites pairs well with your culinary choices. Another essential stop is Emily’s Restaurant & Tapas Bar. With 46 tapas items on the menu like oysters Rockefeller, crab cakes, lobster ravioli, and she crab soup, you can warm up with small plates before moving on to dinner entrees. If you prefer an urban environment, have dinner at the Saltus River Grill, which brings together sushi samplings with traditional seafood fare and an array of wine choices.  If you happen to be in town in early June, sample savory BBQ at the annual High On The Hog BBQ Festival, where dozens of competitive cooking teams compete in this S.C. BBQ Association-sanctioned event. On Friday night, shrimp and chicken take center stage in the Everything Lowcountry competition. Saturday is all about the BBQ.
