Boone, North Carolina

Heading west out of Lewisburg on I-64, you’ll want to take a bit of a northern detour at Beckley to visit the New River Gorge area. Go on a guided whitewater tour with groups like Rivermen at Adventures on the Gorge for some of the best rafting waters in the eastern United States. Other water and land adventures abound, so plan to spend a fun morning here before heading south on I-77. Boone offers several town parks for exploration, though the real draw is the stunning peaks of Grandfather Mountain. At almost 6,000 feet of elevation, choose from 11 trails in varying levels of difficulty. Walk across the mile high swinging bridge and take in the incredible views. Mine for precious stones at the Foggy Mountain Gem Mine or see what’s blooming at the Daniel Boone Native Gardens. Take on various water challenges (padding, rafting, etc.) if you’re up for an adventure. If you’re in town on a Saturday, head to the Watauga County Farmer’s Market for delicious breakfast to fuel your adventures. Enjoy Southern specialties made from locally-sourced ingredients at Vidalia or a casual, yummy lunch at Proper and Our Daily Bread.
